Leslie was slumbering in her bed when all of a sudden she was startled awake. Maybe it was what it was because she had nightmares, or maybe it was because of what she had to do that night. She wasn’t sure. Leslie was a black and amber haired, dusky green eyed girl. Her hair was always up in a high ponytail. Her fashion sense was ordinary, not exotic like some people. As Leslie tried to fall asleep again, she was reviewing her plan. “On Halloween night, go to the biggest mansion on First Street, I dare you,” her arch enemy said in a whisper. “I bet you couldn’t last an hour!”
“Are you sure?” Leslie had glowered at him.
“I’m positive,” he replied. “They say it’s haunted.” With that, he gave an evil cackle that sent shivers up her spine. Now it was 12:00 a.m. on the most dreaded day of the year –Halloween. The old wise women say that ghosts and ghouls always come out from their hiding places on Halloween. And when they do, they prey on people late at night.
“Step one: sneak into the mansion. Step two: Stay for one hour. Step three: Sneak out unseen.” As she was reviewing her easy plan, she slowly dozed off.
Now she was standing in front of the mansion that everyone loathed. Even though the blazing sun was down, it was still blistering hot. As she waited, she munched on a candy bar. Then she wished that she had eaten more at home. Leslie stared at the mansion that made her massive house look puny. Even the mansions on either side looked miniature. Even thought it looked repulsive to her, some people thought it was attractive.
All of a sudden she saw something in an upper story window that made her blood run cold. A ghost. What was it that the old wise women say? That ghosts, ghouls, vampires, and wicked witches roamed that certain mansion. No wonder her detestable arch enemy dared her to go inside it.
She was going to go inside no matter what. She didn’t know she had spoken out loud until someone replied.
“Even if you die?” Accompanied with it was an evil snicker that Leslie automatically despised.
“Of course!” Leslie said, “Now show your self!”
“You can’t see me, and you will never see me until you join me in death!” The voice howled.
“Right,” Leslie tried to sound skeptical, but she was positive it wasn’t working. The voice just laughed harder and with more hysteria.”
“If you’re scared, then back out and tell Mark that you couldn’t do it. He’d be really happy.” The voice said reasonably.
“An understatement,” she muttered under her breath. “Wait, how do you know Mark? And why in the whole world am I talking to someone I can’t see?” Mark was her arch- enemy. Suddenly, she saw a rustle in the bushes next to her. She immediately jumped into them in time to rugby tackle Mark as he tried to make a quick exit through the brush.
“What are you doing here?” Leslie demanded furiously. “Did you not truly believe that I would go through with the dare?” He tried to get free, so she sat on him. “You’re impossible!”
“No I’m not!” Mark tried to wriggle free, but Leslie had him in her firm grasp. “If you think I’m making those noises, then you’re dead wrong. Even though I loath you, I would never do anything as hideous as that!”
The voice shrieked with laughter. “That’s about the first true thing you’ve said in your life!”
“Right now Leslie, I wouldn’t care if you did leave because I am!” Mark said, terrified.
“Thank You! I would have left without you anyway,” Leslie remarked.
“Come on!” He said, sprinting away.
By the mansion in the colossal bushes, an old-looking man smiled and said, “I love my job.” In his hand he had a Halloween toy that cackled. His job was to scare away kids until his master returned. He did his job by pressing the button on the toy to make it laugh and when it was done, add his voice to make kids run away. It was working now, and it would work in 1000 years when he had to help his master return. Then they would hunt these petty humans. He smiled, showing inch-long fangs. Until then, he was content to wait.
