Drip drip drip The constant noise would most likely never cease, so Yumi sat up, silver eyes dulled from the lack of sleep. Dark circles had made their way under her eyes, and she felt more irritable and moody than she should. She placed a hand on her stomach, the small bump becoming more visible as time went on. She looked down with a small smile. "You're never going to let me have any sleep, are you?" she asked, standing up. She had become the master of slipping out of bed unnoticed ever since she had become pregnant. Her husband never suspected a thing as she had gone to get something to snack on at the late hours of night. She tiptoed over to the living room and thumbed through the pages of a letter she had received from her sister-in-law. It was just a bunch of familiar news. Temari and her husband, Shikamaru, were happy together and they were expecting. There was nothing new on Konoha's struggles. That was always a good sign. That meant that the Akatsuki were still in hiding. She finished reading and picked up some parchment to write a reply. She tucked pitch black strands of hair behind her ear before sitting on the large sofa. She flicked on a lamp that sat next to her and sighed. What would she have to write about? This was something that Kankuro would understand a bit better than she did. She tapped the bottom of the pen against her lip as she thought. Sleep would work wonders for her and the writers' block that she was suffering from, but it wasn't going to show up. She heard the soft squeak of the mattress springs and shook her head. He was up. It was only around 3 in the morning. It usually took him a couple hours to notice her absence, but that meant that he was getting used to her being there. "What are you doing up?" he asked, ending his question with a yawn. She turned to look at him with a kind smile. "I was having trouble sleeping, and I wanted to start writing a reply to your sister," she explained, "That and the baby's not going to let me sleep." He laughed softly, accompanied by a smile. It was the kind of smile that any woman would fall for. Yumi really wanted for their baby to inherit that smile. He moved forward, but turned at the last second and headed for the kitchen. She could only laugh. "Get me something while you're at it!" she snapped.
* * * Neji hadn't been sleeping very well since his fight with his sister nearly one year ago. He had cursed her, and it was killing her slowly. He may have disowned her 3 years ago, when she had killed his girlfriend, but she had been his sister and his student. There was nothing in the universe that could break their bond, not even betrayal. The balcony of the small house that the Raikage had allowed him to stay was perfectly positioned under shade and stars. He had sat in a similar place with his sister, talking about missions and such. How had he not known that she would betray the village. He had analyzed every conversation they had since she left. Nothing she had brought up had led him to believe that she was so evil. There was a light tapping on the large wooden door. Neji turned and sighed. He didn't really want to talk to anyone at the moment, but he still opened the door. A familiar friend stood there, holding a bento box and a bag of ramen cups. "Lady Raikage?" he asked, a bit confused. "Why are you here?" She scoffed before replying. "I've been your girlfriend for two years now, and you don't have the decency to call me by my first name?" It was true. He had been so used to the formalities that it was hard for him to say her real name. "I'm sorry, Nanami. It's just confusing at times. But again... What are you doing here?" She pushed past him and put the food on a small table. "I thought you might be hungry... And awake." she replied, flopping down on a chair. Neji smirked. "And how did you know that I was awake?" Nanami smirked and pulled her seemingly dark hair behind her ear. "I'm not blind. You've been standing on the balcony and talking to yourself for a while." she replied. He took a seat across from her, the chair making a small creaking noise. He knew that Nanami would most likely make a comment about not eating so many chips or snack foods, but she remained silent. She was reading his expression again. She was good at it. Ever since they had first met, even the slightest glance could be a dead give away. "You were thinking about the past again... Weren't you?" she asked, looking deep into his eyes. "Yes..." he replied, reluctantly. She stared at the floor and shook her head. "It's not your fault that she did what she did!" He shook his head. "But I could have prevented it!" "And what do you think that they would have done to her if you had found out?" she snapped. He paused. What would they have done? Would they have killed her for plotting betrayal? He had never really thought about it. "Two years ago... During the fight... I'm going to be responsible for her death." he muttered. Nanami quietly stepped over to him and took his hand into hers, lifting his hand to her lips. "I held your hand through it then, and I plan to keep holding it until you don't need me or death takes me." They both remembered that day vividly, unfortunately, so did Setsuna, who was plotting her revenge as she had been for the past 3 years. With the curse that her brother had places on her, her byakugan had become permanent. She was going to get revenge him and his little b***h, and she had the help that she needed. She was with her sensei, her personal hero, the puppet master, the sharkman and the girl with the blue hair. This was the meager remains of the Akatsuki, and she was a part of it.
