Daily Advice Column
Don't know what to do? Let Dandan tell you what's what.
Daily advice: food
Always smell your food before you eat it.

Even toddlers know this.

You can tell they know this because of the face they make when presented with boiled broccoli. And honestly, broccoli ought only be blanched or steamed--never boiled to bitter mush.

Even toddlers know this!

What will it take to make or break this hint of love?
We need time, only time.

Toddlers don't like broccoli since it is a bitter food an as children we have better taste buds; they dull out over time. One in four people is born with...I think it's 4x the normal number of taste buds; hence, picky eaters. =D
So tell me darling, do you wish we'd fall in love?
All the time, all the time.

I think I was the odd one then... I ate broccoli all the time, boiled, raw, steamed... maybe I was one of the few that never smelled their food and just dove right into it. sweatdrop

Broccoli with cheese is very nice, yes.

I was maybe born with too many taste buds, so I ate most of my food plain. Appreciation of the bitter taste is something that can be learned, but not always. It is only when we are warned that something is 'yucky' that we, as children, adopt the distaste. But when very young, a child will 'intuitively eat'. They will touch, smell, separate their food--and only eat when absolutely hungry and only stop eating when actually full. We grow up forced to finish what's on our plates, which can cause over-eating and obesity.

And broccoli can be very sweet and mild, if it is harvested correctly and cooked well. The same with asparagus, brusselsprouts, etc. Veggie appreciation is important, and when all else fails: spice, spice, spice!
