Ryoku sighed and leaned backward on his hands. He looked very tired, and I wanted to find a way to help him, but wasn’t sure how. I took a seat next to him, then, feeling as though it would help, I leaned against him. He straightened as if he was surprised, and I closed my eyes. I could feel his head turn to look at me. My eyes flew open as he grabbed my waist and hoisted me onto his lap. He held me close to him and I huddled against him as if was natural.
“I do know you.” I murmured. I was sure of it now; I knew him from somewhere.
“You…” I could hear his voice very well, though it was soft, so I knew he was looking down at me, “You will be four soon.” It sounded as if he had changed his mind about what to say at the last moment.
I looked up at him. I had never celebrated a birthday, and didn’t recall anyone telling me when it was, so I was insanely surprised for Ryoku to know anything about it.
“How did you…” I was cut off by a voice that sounded behind me.
“Well! Now ain’t that cute?”
I poked my head out from behind Ryoku to see who had spoken. It was a man, probably in his late thirties that didn’t look to well. He seemed like he was a traveler, or something, and carried a pack, wearing tattered clothes with wispy brown hair and a beard cluttering his face. But my eyes didn’t focus on him; they went directly to the sword he was holding hat was pointed at us. Offensive position. I let a small sound escape myself as I realized he had come to steal from us. Natural fear came over me, but Ryoku hadn’t moved, he seemed just as calm as he had been earlier.
“It’s little annoyances like these…” His voice trailed off. I continued to stare at the man, frightened.
“Ooh… haha!” A smile spread across the man’s face, “And I’ll be needing that girl for a while too! Oh, don’t worry, mister. You’ll get ‘er back!” He crackled with laughter, and my eyes widened. I clutched Ryoku tighter.
“What?” A growl of hatred erupted from Ryoku’s throat. It was a complete contrast from the calm voice he had moments earlier. “What are you suggesting?!” He demanded. New fear came to me. Ryoku was scaring me. There was such a strong feeling of hatred and agitation coming from him.
I don’t know how it happened, but I barely got to blink before I found myself parked on the ground by the river, memories of ‘that day’ flooded back to me as I saw Ryoku strike his deadly sword into the man. The world seemed darker. I felt smaller. I heard a scream, I’m pretty sure it was my own, and suddenly realized how much I was crying. My nose was running, and I was probably drooling a bit too. He turned his gaze on me, with the dame deadly look that he had ‘that day’. The eyes of a killer. Scrambling backwards, I fell into the river. I had never been so relieved to be drifting away from that man, I was scared. I was fairly certain that I had wet myself, but was now unable to tell since I was in that water.
