Welcome Hershel!
A baby Hatched today! Here's the breakdown:
22nd: 3:42 pm- first cheap heard by mom; brown egg has one small crack 3:43 pm- frantic rush to get everything set up
23rd: 1:05 am- Hole larger and moving, more peeping, responds to clucking 1:32 am- 2nd hole made 1:35- Top being pushed off 1:36- Half-way there, part of chick visible 1:39- Wing visible, has stripes 1:41- Almost there... 1:42- DONE! Brown with peach legs, first few steps made moments later
Since there was a final that day, I had to go to bed and leave the new baby alone in the incubator. When I woke up s/he was doing fine. I got to show her/him off to the Priors, who stopped by right before we left. When I got back, s/he was pretty much all dried off. I set up a small box in the living room table for her/him. After some thought, I decided to go with the male gender (I am still unsure) and call him Hershel, the Hanukkah chick. I let him snuggle up in the old rabbit pelt I had. He really liked it. None of the other eggs have hatched yet. I've decided to let them sit until Friday.
