Chapter 1: Preppy Hearts
Rebecca stood in the doorway to her room, gapping at what lay inside. There lay a boy on her bed; a shirtless boy on her bed; a cute and shirtless boy on her bed. She sighed looking him over for a moment.
“Steven, wake up,” she said softly as she shook his shoulder. He didn’t move, only snore. Even his snoring was cute, she gritted her teeth.
“Wake up!” Rebecca grabbed the pillow from under his head and hit him with it.
“OW!” Came a protesting Steven as he stared at her ruefully. “What was that for?”
“Stealing my bed. Move over,” she said, pushing him over playfully as she lay down beside him. She cuddled into a pillow and closed her eyes.
“You woke me up, just so you can sleep?” Steven sounded hurt and aggravated. The bed was a small twin and it didn’t hold them both very comfortably.
“Uh-huh,” she murmured back, not moving. She opened her eyes and looked at him.
“I’d sleep with you, but I think I should get home,” he whispered, causing Rebecca to stifle a laugh.
“No, stay here. I need someone to snuggle with.” He smiled and lay closer to her, her head resting on his chest as she fell into a deep sleep.
“Rebecca, wake up,” Steven kissed her cheek softly. She opened her eyes and stared at the speaker. He sounded like Steven, but he wasn’t the Steven she knew. He looked like a football player, not his usual emo-like, punk self. She got off her bed in a hurry, looking down at her… Pink blankets? No, she had green ones. They were lime colored.
Rebecca turned around, catching her new reflection. Her long brown hair was now ear-length and blonde. She looked like a cheerleader, uniform and all. She watched her eyes go wide, no longer layered with eyeliner. She glanced around her room, layered in pink and it felt… happy. She felt like she would throw up or scream.
“Um… Hon, I have to… Like… Go.” She was shocked at the sound of her own voice.
“But, Rebecca, you said we can do it again,” Steven interjected and she stared at him in disgust.
“Hell no,” she turned away from him, and raced to the bathroom. The counter was lined with make up, pink items, and new blue walls. She looked into the mirror and screamed.
“Rebecca, wake up,” Steven kissed her cheek softly. She opened her eyes and stared up at Steven, her Steven.
“Steven,” she hugged him close and tried not to cry. “I was afraid I lost my mind.”
He held her close automatically, reacting to her sudden affection. “Lost your mind? You’ve only been asleep for ten minutes and you thought you went insane?”
“It was my dream,” she sniffed, smelling his shirt. The smell was everywhere; smoke and cologne. She dried what tears had fallen. “You were a football player and I was a cheerleader. Something was going on, but I don’t remember what.”
“You were… I was… Wow, what a weird dream. Maybe you are losing your mind.” He kissed her head, smelling the jasmine and sugar that she constantly smelled of.
“You should have seen it,” she looked up at him and stared into his eyes. With a smiled and a soft kiss, she began to release him. Steven laughed, kissing her forehead.
“You silly girl, I have to go to work. Will you walk with me?”
“You silly boy, that’s a two mile walk there and back. I’ll fall asleep.”
“Then, I take my leave. Fare well, Mon Amie.”
“No fare wells. See you later, sugar.” She kissed him and watched him walk away before falling into a dreamless sleep.
Chapter 2: Take the Cake…
Rebecca stared out into space wondering when the world will happen to her. She was thinking of Step—
THUMP!!!
“Hi, ‘becca!” Came an energetic voice.
“Hello, Avery,” Rebecca replied and hugged the girl who had tackled her. “How’s Tegan?”
Avery looked pale and shook her head. “He doesn’t know.”
“He doesn’t know?” Avery looked worried, an unsettling sight for anyone. “You haven’t asked yet?!”
“No.”
“Hell, you should.”
“I know… I’ll see you later.”
“Bye,” Rebecca said hugging her again. Avery sighed and bounced away. “Poor girl.”
“Yeah, she should just ask him to marry her.” Rebecca smiled at the voice, receiving a kiss on the cheek for the voice’s host.
“Hi, Steven. She’s going to.”
“Don’t forget the cake, then. Wedding cake is good.”
“Maybe we should get some.”
“Rebecca! Are you asking me to marry you for the cake?”
“What if I am, Steven?”
“Then, no. If it’s because we’re in love, then yes.”
“Ok then, October 31st we get cake,” Rebecca giggled and Steven looked pleased kissing her lips softly.
“Alright, love. But, I don’t have a ring.”
“Don’t worry, neither do I.” She lay back on the green field at the high school, as he lay next to her. “25 cents and we’ll have them.”
“No,” he smiled, “That’s too cheap. Let’s go with 50 cent rings.”
They laughed and talked about their mock wedding. Rebecca stared up at the sky, looking over animal shaped clouds.
“Well, love. I know you love me, but you need to stop ignoring me. I might be forced to leave ya.”
“No, no! I was listening,” she stammered. “Something about Halloween costumes at the wedding.”
“No, something about wedding vows in a different language.”
“Um… I knew that. I was… ah… Testing you?”
“Uh-huh,” he smiled as he kissed her again. “I got to get to work. Later.”
“Bye,” Rebecca said sadly, staring at the clouds again.
Chapter 3: Dreams
“I was like, totally not me!” The anti-Rebecca said. “I was, like, geek-ish and not pink.”
“Uh-huh,” said the anti-Steven with a yawn. “Can we just ********, Anna?”
“Fine, Jay.” Anna Rebecca Jones (anti-Rebecca) sighed to Jay Steven Ross (anti-Steven). “It was, like, just a dream, anyway.”
“Well, practice starts in 20 minutes. So, we gotta hurry up.”
“Then, go. We can ******** later,” she sighed again. “Like, tomorrow.”
“Cool, I’ll be here tomorrow,” he kissed her head softly and left. She bit her lip and lay back on her bed. She stared up at the ceiling and heard a creak from her bed. Jay was holding himself over her, his knees on either side of her hips. He leaned down and captured her lips, on hand on her neck and the other beside her head.
“Not going?” She smiled, kissing back after a moment. He pulled away with a grin.
“Cancelled,” he managed before returning his lips to hers. He let his hands explore her body before they lingered on the button of her jeans.
“Rebecca,” Steven said in a pleading whisper.
“Yeah?”
“Can we…” He looked down at her chest, just to avoid her eyes. “Not?”
“Sure,” she smiled, hugging him. “We don’t have to if you don’t want to.”
“Really?”
“No. You have to stay home. Your fever’s 102 degrees and you’re getting me sick.”
“So, we can’t just sleep today?”
“We can and will, damn it.”
“But… But… We need money for an apartment.”
“You are sick. It’s my day off. Now sleep before I have to medicate you.”
“But—“
“Arguing isn’t sleeping.”
“Fine… Snore,” he said bluntly. She laughed, cuddling into the blankets.
“If you need anything, just tell me.”
“Ok,” he paused. “Snore.”
“Quit that,” she laughed. “Steven, you need real sleep, not fake snoring.”
“But, I how can I sleep while laying by you? …Snore.”
“Learn. It’s going to be that way in an apartment, too.”
“Ah, I’m never going to sleep, then.”
“Why?”
“Why sleep when your dreams are beside you?”
“Oh, how cheesy of you... You’re sick, that’s a reason to sleep.”
