What's the point? That was the question Jaye often asked himself. A down on his luck mercenary, he had messed up on the last several jobs, lucky enough to escape with his life. Or unlucky enough, he'd often think. Of course, it wasn't always that way, he used to be known all throughout Lacore as an excellent mercenary. He'd often stare of into nothing, thinking of those days. He never blamed himself, always his partner, everything would be her fault. Sick of the blame, she left to work on her own, he hadn't heard from her since. "What was her name again?" he asked himself audibly. Rayne, he'd remember. He often wondered what happened to her after she left. Rayne had been beautiful in her inhuman way. A variety of wood nymph, Rayne had been tall, had dark skin, large brown eyes, short moss-green hair, and the voluptuous figure common in nymphs. When looked at, she did not seem like a threat to anyone, a mistake for anyone who let their guard down. An thief and an expert with her dagger, she'd often be the reason they had completed the mission successfully; while she was swift and graceful, Jaye was slower and clumsy. A berserker, he relied on brute strength. Of course, being a berserker, he had a terrible temper, taking out his anger on Rayne. That, too was perhaps another reason she left. Often, for a moment, he'd long to see her again, but the moments were short and he'd blame her again.
"What do you mean you don't have the friggin' money!" the nymph glared menacingly at the man. "I did the damn job right and I want my money!"
"I didn't think a little girl like you would be able to finish the job so quickly, so I spent it." the man admitted "Please, don't do anything rash, I have children. I'm all they have, since their mother died."
She almost stabbed him for the 'little girl' comment, but restrained herself. "I want that money... I'll give you some time to pay it, but if you don't, too bad for your children." she stormed off. "God, I'm getting too soft." In the past, she would have simply killed the man for not paying, but something held her back now. Of course, things were easier now, without Jaye to mess it up, but at times she missed having someone so strong, perhaps she'd find a new partner. One who wouldn't try to take advantage of her in her sleep and take his anger out on her when he didn't get his way, maybe even a girl. Maybe even a magic-user.
