Cyber Cigarettes
The most dangerous and enjoyable thing in the world for teens to do is spending hours playing video games. According to the article called First-Person Shooter: The Video Gamers’ Addiction by Dale Tournemille from CTV News about a young 16 year old boy that has a similar addiction. The boy’s name is Griffin Bengar. He lives in Toronto, Canada. His father Robin Bengar and his mother Nicky Guadagni are frustrated and don’t know what to do with their son’s addiction to video games. Not just any video game but action-packed first person shooter video games. Violent Video games can be exciting, very addictive and also dangerous.
To be addicted to something they must do the same routine over and over. When Griffin was young and innocent, he started to play a duck hunting game. The game seems fun and harmless because the main goal of the game is to shoot the duck that appear on the screen. This is similar to smoke cigarettes because everybody starts small. Griffin started to get bored with the same duck action game and wanted to search for something more exciting.
After a long time with the addiction, sometimes the addiction can evolve the person to be violent. Griffin was a normal kid in school, but suddenly his attention was caught by a tight, full of action video game. The game is called Counter-Strike; there are many modes to play the game. The player must choose to be on one of two opposing team, Terrorist or Counter Terrorist. Then when the game starts each team must move around the map and kill each other with the equipment that they choose to use like a machine gun, sniper rifle or a knife. This game makes Griffin to be more addicted to violent video games.
By the results Griffin’s parents decided to take action. Griffin’s father, Robin Bengar was very frustrated with Griffin’s behavior. The game is beginning to affect Griffin’s personality and actions. The game Counter-Strike became a poison to Griffin as he began to skipped school and became distant from his family. Robin Bengar felts frightened and panicked for 2 months each time he saw his son playing on the computer all night. Griffin’s father thought that the game was harmless and does not have any negativity on his son but he was wrong. The game became a wall between Robin Bengar and Griffin.
A former member of the elite U.S. Army ranger David Grossman says that violent video games cause’s problem of home life and feed the teen violent actions. Grossman says that when teens play violent video game, the game is actually teaching teens how to kill. There are 3 things to kill a human, a weapon, skill, and the desire to carry on the action. David Grossman says that violent video game provide the skill and desire to kill on teens. These violent video games are mostly war based and first-person shooting games. These games caught interest in Griffin. Not only addictive to Griffin but to other teens too. A son of the mother Susan Ivan became violent and misbehaves because of violent video games.
Violent video games can be fun and addictive but also can cause many social problems. The fact that violent video games influence violence behavior on teens is not proven yet but violent video games obsessed Griffin from his family. Some people say that violent video game is the cause of their children misbehavior but some people like Dr. Stephen Kline, a media analysis professor at Simon Fraser University says that is violent video games that cause violent behavior but the society surround the person. Dr. Maressa Hecht says that is possible to be addicted to computer video games or a cyber addiction. The mystery of violent video games influence on teens and Griffin’s behavior remain a mystery.
