I've take a few forays into the General Discussion forum. Every one of them has proven a complete disappointment.
Having left all that...kind of stuff...behind with my sudden and unexpected departure from The-N, I arrive here (at Marshall's request) to find not only more of the same, but much more of the same, and in a perpetual, unregulated stream.
At least The-N had some kind of restrictions to it aside from "no spam" and "make sure your post is in the right forum."
Not that there are too many flattering things that can be said about The-N.
I'm sure there are good, intelligent people, here in Gaia. I know at least two of them, and one is the guy who invited me. But with nearly 10,000,000 users (I have no idea what the actual figure is), I suppose statistics is on my side.
That said, I have yet to find any/many of those people in GD.
Seriously, is religion, sex, and angst all some people can talk about?
*Sighs*
I'll have to admit that I've not taken all that much time to read all that many threads. With gems like, "I masturbated, and rubbed my homework off my hand," one isn't really disposed to start taking a look at certain threads.
I'll have to keep looking before I can really form an educated opinion on the matter, but what I've see so far hasn't impressed me. I just...lament the apparent (and apparently complete) lack of real substance here on Gaia. It was more understandable when the webboard (The-N) was comprised of almost exclusively teens and pre-teens, and that by design.
See, wordiness and "sounding smart" aren't what I'm looking for; I've already found that. What I'm looking for is open mindedness (and I don't mean "extreme liberalism" wink , and actual critical thought. Not just "Oh, I can prove anything you say wrong, but if you manage to stump me, I'll give you gold."
And yes, I did read a thread that started in that exact vein, just this morning.
I suspect I'll have to start searching through the other forums. I'm not very confident that GD will have much that will redeem it, in my eyes.
Then again, I've been wrong before.
An intellectual is a person who has discovered something more interesting than sex. - Aldous Huxley
Education is the ability to listen to almost anything without losing your temper or your self-confidence. - Robert Frost
