I stood there frozen. I wouldn’t move. No matter how much my mind screamed for me to run, I did not move. It was as if I was paralyzed with fear. I mentally winced and tears pricked my eyes every time his fist crashed down. That’s when HE noticed me. A gasp escaped my lips as his red eyes turned to me. Finally my body got the message my mind had been sending it: run! I turned around and ran back towards the door, which I had come into the apartment from. I could hear his heavy, drunken footsteps coming after me. I cried out in fear as I ran down the many stairs of the apartment building, gasping. As I turned the corners I laid eyes on the exit sign above the door. Another cry left me, but this one was one of relief. I had never been so happy to see that door in my life. “Come back here you little wench!” I heard him shout.
I looked back momentarily to see my disgrace for a father tumble down the stairs as he tried to catch up with me. No, he no longer was the daddy I once knew and loved. That man was a monster, and I was going to rid my family of him. I pushed the door open and ran out for my life. I had only been to the police station once with my mother when I was ten. That trip was to get my father out of prison for disrupting the peace. It had all started back then. That had been four years ago, yet it was as if my feet had the path memorized. I knew by the time that I ran down my second block that I had lost him, yet my pace did not slow. I might have been out of his reach, but my unconscious mother and scared little brother were still in his grasp. I could not, no, would not stop until I had reached the station and gotten my father arrested.
After what seemed like an eternity, but was probably just ten minutes I finally bounded up the steps of my destination. I pushed the large gray doors open and stopped while I caught my breath. The place looked exactly like I remembered it. Sure, they applied a fresh coat of paint and the people were different but everything else looked the same. I looked around for the main desk and sprinted toward it. “Please! You have to help me! My dad beat my mom ‘till she was unconscious! I got away but my brother is still at home!” I shouted the words at the top of my lungs. Only then, when I heard the panic and anxiety in my voice did I realize how scared I was.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa there. Hold on a minute sweetheart,” the woman at the desk said as she stood up and walked over to me. She wrapped her arms around me and I let my tears come out. We didn’t have time for her to console me! “We have to stop him! You have to get him away from my family! He’s going to hurt my brother! I just know he is!” I cried out angrily as I moved out of her embrace. She sighed but agreed, “Okay, lets go. What’s your address?” she asked as she grabbed her keys and a gun from her desk. In my mind, I was thinking my family was going to finally be rid of the monster. Little did I know the monster was the least of my problems.
