Chapter Thirty-Five
The police had told Jade on Tuesday morning that they’d gone to David’s apartment and he wasn’t there and neither was his truck. They had even gone to David’s mom’s house, which is where he usually was if he wasn’t at home. But he wasn’t there either. This made it harder for Jade to even leave the house. She should’ve been happy that David hadn’t called her or texted her yet today but it just made her even more nervous. It took Maya the longest time to convince Jade that it would be fine at school and she wasn’t going to leave her. Once Jade was at school, she pushed the fear deep down so no one would ask her any questions. When they walked through the front gate, Norman was there waiting for them, leaning against the gate. When he saw Jade coming, he pushed himself off the gate and approached them.
“Hey,” he said, “Did you go to-”
“Yes,” Jade said, “He wasn’t at his apartment but they’re gonna keep an eye on the place.”
Maya saw Audrey a few feet away and touched Jade’s shoulder, “Are you gonna be ok?”
Jade looked at her like a sad puppy and Maya hugged her tight, “You’re not gonna be by yourself. You’ve got him and you’re surrounded by people all day. I’ll even wait for you tonight so we can go home together. Ok?”
“Yeah. Yeah you’re right. I’ll be ok,” Jade took a few deep breaths and nodded. Maya smiled and then ran off to see if Audrey was doing any better. Norman started walking, beckoning Jade to follow him.
“So what else did they say?” Norman asked.
“They told me to write everything down,” Jade said, “Every phone call or text message. And I have to save anything he may send me. But they can’t even find him. I mean, where else could this guy possibly be? He could be anywhere.”
“Maybe we should tell the dean,” Norman said, “She could make sure he doesn’t set foot onto the campus.”
Jade nodded and grabbed onto his arm. She knew everyone could see her holding onto him like this but she didn’t care at this point. She just wanted to be close to him, “Yeah. Let’s do that. Just don’t go without me. I don’t want to be alone.”
“Audrey!” Maya called. Audrey turned and waited for Maya to run towards her, “I feel really bad about leaving you yesterday. I should’ve stayed with you. Or I at least could’ve run after those girls to beat the s**t out of them for doing that to you.”
“Maya it’s really ok,” Audrey chuckled, “And you don’t need to beat anyone up for me. But thank you for the thought.”
“You just let me know,” Maya said, punching the air, “I’ll kick their asses. Tell Jade too. Did you see what she did to Vivian? Between her and I, those girls will be all ******** up.”
“I don’t want you guys to hurt those girls!” Audrey exclaimed, bursting out laughing, “I just want them to leave me alone.”
“Audrey, let me ask you something,” Maya said, “How many people told you to go to the dean with this?”
Audrey looked away but Maya never allowed her to avoid eye contact. Finally Audrey gave Maya a defeated groan, “Three people. Jade, Tom, and some other girl. I don’t know who she was.”
“Then why don’t you do it?” Maya said, “This is serious now Audrey. Not only would they get in trouble for harassing you but they would also be in some serious trouble for ruining your property.”
“I’ll do it,” Audrey mumbled, “But I could be in some trouble for tattling. I didn’t know those other girls.”
“Who cares?” Maya looked down at her phone and frowned when she saw the time, “********. I’m gonna be late for class. Do what me and THREE OTHER PEOPLE have already told you. Go. To. The. Dean.”
“I will, I will,” Audrey said, shooing Maya away, “Now go before you end up being late.”
Maya quickly hugged Audrey good-bye and started to walk away. Maya wasn’t too far away when Audrey saw those same girls coming towards her. Audrey ran the other way to avoid getting Maya’s attention. The two girls were now following her and Audrey didn’t know where she was supposed to go. She didn’t exactly have time to think about it so she just kept going. But eventually, one of the girls caught up to her and shoved her hard. Audrey fell forward and slid across the pavement, opening up her knees. Audrey turned and looked at her knees that were bleeding profusely.
“Why won’t you leave me alone?” Audrey asked, “Those rumors aren’t true! And even if they were, why would you care?!”
“Because you stole something from everyone else involved!” she said, “And of course you would tell me that those rumors aren’t true!”
“And we’re not going to stop unless you give up London,” the other one added.
“But that’s not fair! Those rumors aren’t true!” Audrey yelled. The two girls ignored her and walked off just as people were starting to take notice. Blood trickled down her legs, staining her socks. Standing up was extremely painful and she almost fell down again but managed to stay on her feet. Once she started walking for awhile, the pain subsided just enough to walk normally. She went into the bathroom and soaked a paper towel with cold water. She pressed it against her bleeding knees and winced at the immense stinging. Once the bleeding stopped, she wiped off her bloody legs. Whoever came into the bathroom next would be confused by the bloody paper towels in the trashcan. But she managed to get out before anyone came into the bathroom to see her. Once she was cleaned up, she went to her first class, arriving just in time. The same girl she’d talked to yesterday was sitting in the front, staring at her as if she knew exactly what had happened. Audrey did the same thing she did every day since the rumors surfaced. She sat in the back of the room so no one would see her face, exhaustion and fear written all over it.
Maya sat in her class, completely bored and not only was she bored, but she was distracted by the most recent events. Jade was terrified of her insane ex-boyfriend and Audrey was being bullied by some stupid bitches who believed some ridiculous rumor and were probably just jealous because they liked Professor Brooks. She wanted to help both of them but she had no clue what to do to help either one of them. She was just as helpless as they were. All she could do for Jade was let her stay at her house and all she could do for Audrey was offer to beat some a**. Her phone buzzed in her bag, moving her thoughts away from her friends. She snuck a look at her phone and smiled and smothered a giggle when she saw Charlie’s name.
Meet for lunch?
Maya bit her bottom lip as she typed back, Aren’t you in the middle of class?
Nope. I cancelled class.
Shaking her head, Maya agreed to meet him for lunch. Charlie was apparently just sitting inside of his classroom with nothing to do but he had cancelled his first class anyway. Maya couldn’t help but laugh quietly at her phone while she texted him. Needless to say, she didn’t learn much today in this class. She finished with her morning classes and then left while on her break to meet Charlie. When she told Charlie she had arrived, he told her that his door was open and he had stepped out for a minute and Richard was inside because he’d invited him along. Maya did as he said and let herself in, glaring at Richard, “Really?”
“What?”
“Are you making friends with Charlie just to piss me off?” Maya asked, “How am I supposed to move on with my new relationship when you keep hanging around?”
“How was I supposed to know you’d start dating someone who works at my new school?” Richard said, “I can’t control who you go for. You think this is easy for me? Because it’s not.”
“And yet you decide to date Olivia?” Maya said, “Sounds like you moved on easily.”
“I’m not with Olivia anymore,” Richard wrinkled his eyebrows and shook his head like he’d eaten something sour, “I couldn’t stand being around her even if it did get under your skin. Besides, I never want to be with anyone else. If I can’t be with you then I’ll just be alone.”
“Richard that’s ridiculous,” Maya said, “I’ve managed just fine without you…”
Richard crossed his arms and looked down at his feet, “Well that’s great for you Maya. Some of us just can’t heal as quickly as you apparently can.”
Maya bit down on her lip to keep herself from crying. She was in no way healed. She didn’t think she could ever move on or stop loving Richard. But she had to try and move on from this with Charlie.
“Hey!” Maya turned around and wiped her eyes as Charlie opened his arms and kissed her, “You guys ready?”
“I think I’ll skip lunch Charlie,” Richard mumbled, “I have things to do that I can’t put off.”
When Richard walked past the two of them, Maya could’ve sworn she saw that his face had turned red and he was wiping his eyes. But he had moved too quickly and Maya couldn’t be for sure on that. Charlie wrapped his arm around Maya’s shoulder and he led her away, “Is he ok?”
Maya had no answer for him and he didn’t push it any further. But it made the rest of their time together just a bit awkward.
