Chapter Thirty-Three
Audrey didn’t know where to go. She didn’t want to walk into a store looking the way she did. But she needed a new shirt to put it on and something to cover her head since she still had some mayonnaise and mustard in her hair. Tom had called her a dozen times when she never showed up. But she had come up with an idea and didn’t have time to answer his calls. Audrey pulled into the parking lot of the shopping center where Jade’s bookstore was. Lucky for her, there was a spot right in front of the door. She called Jade’s work, knowing her phone was put away somewhere. She asked for Jade and waited a few seconds before Jade answered.
“Jade!” Audrey said, trying to look through the window to see Jade, “Come outside for a minute.”
“Audrey? What are you doing outside my work?” Jade asked, “Shouldn’t you be in class right now?”
“I know I should but something happened and I need a favor,” Audrey said, “Come outside.”
Audrey heard Jade sigh and then she heard the phone hang up. A few seconds after that, Jade came outside with her sweatshirt on, hugging her body against the cold winter air. Audrey rolled down her window enough so Jade could only see her eyes.
“What’s the matter?” Jade asked.
“Do you promise not to laugh?” Audrey said. Jade raised an eyebrow and nodded. Audrey slowly rolled down the window so Jade could see Audrey’s shirt stained with mustard, mayonnaise, bread crumbs and pieces of meat. Jade kept her word and didn’t laugh which had actually surprised Audrey.
“What happened to you?” Jade asked.
“Some girls just grabbed my lunch and started throwing it at me,” Audrey said, “Do you have a shirt or a jacket I can use to put over this?”
“All I have is the shirt I came to school in and the sweatshirt I’m wearing,” Jade said. She pointed to a department store at the end of the shopping center, “I can run over there and buy you something.”
Audrey nodded and Jade took off running towards the store. While Jade was gone, Audrey finally called Tom back. And of course, he answered her call on the first ring, “Audrey! Are you ok? Where are you?”
“Tom I’m fine,” Audrey said, leaning back in her seat, “I just had to get a new shirt.”
“What? What for?” Tom asked. Audrey had kept calm after those girls had done this but once she had to explain it to Tom, she burst into tears, “These girls came up to me accusing me of sleeping with you to get you to rig that competition.”
Tom groaned, “Again with that? When will people learn? But, what does that have to do with a new shirt?”
“Well they took our lunch from me and just started throwing it at me,” Audrey mumbled, “It ruined my shirt so my friend had to run to go buy me a new one.”
“Audrey I’m so sorry they did that to you,” Tom said, “You need to go to the dean with this Audrey.”
“I don’t know Tom,” Audrey replied, “I just…I want it to be done. I think now that they’ve ruined my clothes and my hair and made my feet all sticky, they’ve done their worst.”
“Audrey…” Tom sighed, “Don’t keep quiet about this.”
Audrey saw Jade come running back with a plastic bag, “Listen Tom I’ve gotta go. We’ll talk more about this later ok?”
Tom began to protest but Audrey hung up before she could hear him. Jade pulled a plain red sweatshirt out of the bag and handed it to her, “I wasn’t sure what shirt you would even like so I just got you this to cover up the stains until you can get home.”
Audrey nodded and pulled the tags off the jacket and put it on. Jade pulled a hair band off her wrist and held it out to her, “And you should pull your hair back. It’ll make it look less uh…dirty.”
Audrey took the hair band and tied her hair into a ponytail, “Thanks Jade for helping me.”
“I really think you need to go to the dean with this,” Jade said, leaning against the car, “I mean today it was just sandwiches being thrown at you. But you don’t know if they’re even done. They could come back and do something worse. I know some people were really pissed that you won that little competition and they think you slept with Tom to make it happen. I know most of the time it’s like you know the truth so who gives a ******** what everyone else thinks but once people start doing s**t like this, you really should get this under control.”
“So I’ve heard,” Audrey sighed as she started her car. She’d only be missing one class. She just had to get to the rest of them and she’d be fine, “Thanks for the jacket Jade. I’ll see you later.”
Jade stayed outside while Audrey backed up and drove back to the school. And Jade didn’t go back into the bookstore until Audrey was completely out of sight.
Maya bought Charlie his coffee and started walking back, always looking around to make sure she didn’t meet up with Richard. She knew her feelings for Charlie were completely genuine and that getting to Richard was just a bonus. It was just a bonus. Just a bonus. Unfortunately, the two of them crossed paths on their way back. She didn’t want Charlie to ask any questions so she forced herself to walk with Richard. But she wasn’t going to say a damn thing to him. Richard didn’t say anything for awhile either. Finally he sighed heavily.
“Maya listen,” Richard paused for a second, tapping the coffee cup in his hands, “I might’ve gone a bit far.”
“A bit far?” Maya snapped, “You made me look like a b***h! I wouldn’t be with Charlie right now if all I wanted was to piss you off! I don’t do that.”
“I know,” Richard said, “I was wrong. I still don’t believe that you like him as much as you think you do. But you do what you want.”
Maya stopped and smiled a little, “Are you jealous?”
Richard frowned and shook his head as he started walking away from her, “Of course not Maya. You’re not my girlfriend anymore. I don’t care what you do.”
Maya quickened her pace to catch up with him with as her smile spread and she jabbed him on the arm with her finger, “You are Richard!”
“I never wanted to be without you,” he blurted out.
“Then why did you end it?” Maya asked with a scowl, “You don’t wanna be without me but you were the one who decided to end it.”
“That’s not entirely true Maya!” Richard argued, “You assumed it was over!”
“You didn’t exactly correct me,” Maya said, “You let me assume. You let me leave.”
“I was angry,” he said, “You’ve learned today I say some stupid things when you make me angry.”
“I will not take responsibility for this,” Maya shut up once they saw Charlie and Olivia. Charlie opened his arms to her when he saw her and she handed him his coffee. When he kissed her cheek, she moved her face away and brought their lips together. Charlie was surprised but he kissed her back anyway. They broke apart and Charlie sipped his coffee.
“That is good coffee,” he said, hugging Maya against him. Maya rested her head on Charlie’s shoulder and stared at Richard while he awkwardly placed his arm around Olivia’s waist.
Jade dreaded leaving her last class for the night. Instead of going straight home, she’d have to go to David’s apartment. And knowing him, he’d make the visit last for such a long time that she’d be forced to spend the night. She knew she had to get out of this hole she’d dug herself in but now that he was asking her to move in with him, she had to get out of this tonight. But she had to get those pictures out of his grubby little hands.
“What took you so long?” David asked when Jade got there, “You never have classes this late.”
“I’m working later which made me have to push my schedule back even farther,” Jade said, “I can’t stay long. I have a lot of studying to do and I don’t have time for this.”
David grabbed her arm and pulled her down on the couch next to him like he didn’t even hear her, “Jade relax. Sit down with me.”
“David! I don’t have time!” Jade exclaimed, “I know you have no idea what I’m talking about since all you apparently do is sit here on your couch all damn day.”
“Jade you better watch your mouth!” David shouted back, standing up. Jade just met his glare and stood up with him.
“What are you gonna do?” Jade asked with a challenging smirk. She had no idea what he was going to do. But she was definitely expecting the worst. If he did hit her, she could leave right now and putting him away would be a hell of a lot easier. At this point, the shoebox full of those pictures was the only evidence she had against him. Suddenly, David weakened and gently kissed her, holding the back of her head.
“I just wanted to spend time with you,” David whispered against her lips, “Is that so much to ask?”
“No,” Jade said, trying to sound sincere. David kissed the side of her neck and she leaned her head to the side, trying to hide how disgusted she was with him. Jade pushed him back, “Would you do something for me?”
“Of course. Anything,” David said, “What do you need?”
“I was hoping you could get us some dinner,” Jade said. David was about to point to the kitchen but she grabbed his hand and held it in hers, kissing each of his fingers, “No, no. I was in the mood for something different. It wouldn’t be a long drive at all. Won’t you do that for me?”
David smiled and pulled his hand away, kissing her roughly on the lips, “Yeah. I’ll be back in a few minutes. What do you want?”
“The usual,” David grabbed his keys and ran out the door, leaving Jade alone in the apartment. She waited a few minutes until she was sure he was gone. Jade ran into his room and threw herself down on her knees in front of the shoebox. She threw off the lid and took the pictures out of the box, unable to look at them. She shoved all of them into her bag and put the lid back on the box. She wasn’t even going to wait for David to come back. She was just going to get the hell out of there. Jade had what she needed now.
