I'm one of those people that unless I've actually experienced something, or have been deeply affected by said something, then I don't really relate to others on certain subjects. The closest that I can get to explaining it would be to give an example.
Death of a family member is the easiest example, of course. I've not really known any of my close or immediate family except for my mom, dad, and brother, so when a friend is torn up about the death of someone close, all I can say is 'My condolences' or 'I'm sorry for your loss'. Naturally, I try to say something about how although I've never been in that situation yet, save for animals, that I'm sorry and they're in a better place now. Of course, many times I leave out the bit that such a thing has never happened to me.
Another thing that I can't really sympathize or empathize with is nightmares. I've never had one before and as such, I want one to just say that I've experienced one and know what it's like. People tell me, 'Oh no! You don't want to have one, but I do. The last month, there've only been 2 times that I've felt an unconditional, mind-freezing fear in my dreams on two separate occasions. They were brief, confusing, and probably stupid. Did I mention that they made no real sense and were located in my room?
