MJ awoke to something bouncing near her. She opened one eye to see Maya and Kear trying to wake her up. They were shouting insistently at her “Mother! Mother! Wake up!” rather noisily. MJ was practically up all night reading her story books and writing in her own notebook to keep track of her life. She had a lot on her mind, hard as it seems, and she needed relief from the everyday things that happened. “C’mon mother! Get up, get up!” Maya yelled, Kear snickering from behind. She didn’t stir. She was going to wait for the last minute and then pounce on the two girls and carry them off to the dining hall. Little did they know, but MJ had planned out the entire day before she fell asleep, so she was practically fully dressed and ready to go on their little adventure. “Rawr!” MJ growled as she jumped at the two girls, pinning them to the floor in laughter. MJ had her own little wry smile on her face as she picked the two girls up (one in each arm) and bounded around the room. “Hm…what to do with these potato sacks? Should I give them to the butcher, or should I just toss them out the window?” With the word ‘window’ she swung the girls towards the window in her playful gesture. The giggled with their fake ‘oh no’s!’ and ‘oh my’s!’ “I think you should take them downstairs to get ready, milady.” Fire-star chided through the crack the girls left in the door. “Otherwise it shall take longer than expected.” The girls giggled as she set them on the floor and they bounded off towards the door yelling ‘bye general!’ at him as they chased each other in the hallway. “It amazes me what I can do to them…they don’t seem afraid of me…” MJ sighed. “I just wish they could have their old lives back where they were happy all the time.” She set her gaze on the floor as she walked towards the general. “Don’t you see?” Fire-star asked. “They are happy. They have you to look up to, and they have you for a Mother now. You should be proud to know that.” She looked up into his sincere eyes with an utter look of pain. “Yes, but how long, General Hinote, until they fear me? That is my only question.” Fire-star didn’t know how to answer that one. It was rather odd of her to think about that and only that. “On the plus side, with Isabella trying to entangle me in marriage, I’ve no clue as to how they’ll react once she sets a wedding date for whoever the hell she finds.” “MJ…princess…don’t think about that.” He patted her head softly, mostly for his own amusement to watch her leopard ears to twitch. “They’ll be fine, just wait.”
The two finally were dressed properly for their little ‘adventure’ they were going to take. MJ figured it would be best if they didn’t wear the usual dresses and wear something like pants and an old T-shirt or something comfortable. She knew that’s what she was going to wear, no matter how many times they yelled at her for it. “Okay, Maya, Black or Brown…?” MJ asked. She had to think on that one for a while. “It won’t make a difference on whether you’ll go first or not, it’s just a matter of, well, how you go…” “Brown!” Kear looked at Maya with a weird look then she stared up at MJ. “Okay, hop on.” Maya did her best to hop onto the rather tall horse and had a bit of help from MJ. “Now, Kear, you don’t mind going with General Hinote, now do you?” She was hoping she wouldn’t so she didn’t have to take two on one horse along with herself. She had an ‘almost broken’ horse as she liked to call him. “No problem! Besides, I like the color black! It almost matches my eyes!” Fire-star chuckled. “Well, hop aboard young missy and we’ll get going!” Kear squealed and hopped on. Everyone knew that she had a school-girl crush on the General, even though he was about twice her age or so. Speaking of which, this twenty-two (almost twenty-three) year old was crushing on someone as well, but it wasn’t the girl behind him. They both rode off across the bridge onto the dirt road that led to town. Isabella didn’t approve of this, but she warned her to take Fire-star with her otherwise. MJ on the other hand had to wear a cloak to suppress her for greater reasons such as wanted murder or potential attack.
“Isabella, come now. I’m not as stupid as I look. I know what I’m doing…” MJ explained to her worried guardian. “I’ve been shot at before and whipped with swords and things before. What’s wrong with going out into town with the girls?” Isabella shook her head in defeat. “Fine, but you have to wear a cloak or something to at least be safe…” MJ’s eyes gave that ‘whatever’ look and she was done with her business.
“Are you sure you’ll be okay out here, princess?” Fire-star asked. “It’s pretty dangerous because half of these people are old soldiers and they have old ammo for assault.” “There isn’t a reason that people would hate me. I’ve done the best that I could for these people.” She was telling the truth. She was a townswoman once in her life after the war and back. She knew what the people wanted and she gave them those things when she was brought back to power. “General Hinote, you mustn’t worry about me.” “Mother, are you sure it’s all right out here? It looks almost depressing…what’s wrong with them?” Kear asked softly. MJ looked around for a while. “This, my dear, is the Black Death. It’s affecting little part of our town at the moment, but you don’t have to worry about it.” She explained. “I’ve been trying to find a cure, but nothing has appeared yet in my studies…so far very little people have found a way to suppress the pain and that’s just about it.” “Oh…” Was dropped from both of the girls’ lips at once. It was amazing that they almost felt the same thing though they weren’t twins. They enjoyed most the same things, but looked and felt entirely different about certain things.
