At first, it rattles along nicely,
click-clacking down the track at mach 9. Unaware of the danger ahead.
A passenger screams
calling the attention of the others. The track is out!
Panic ensues
a mad rush to the doors.
Random musings—“Did you know that plastic bit on the end of a shoelace is called an aglet?”
Hearty complaints—“Why can’t they just fix the sidewalk?? They’re ‘fixing’ everything else here!”
Even silly observations of how this cloud looks like a bunny or that rock looks like brain-matter.
All would be doomed that instant.
Closer and closer, the broken railing looms
with a pit of nothingness just beyond.
Track runs out, train begins to plummet
Down
Down
Down
The pit swallows it whole.
“Did you know that if a watermelon was falling with us,
it would hit the ground at the same time?” the random musings ask. question
“Why can’t they build a decent track anymore?!” the hearty complaints snarl. scream
The silly observations just squeal gleefully and throw their hands up in the air. blaugh
The noise gradually fades away, the train never arriving at Brain Central Station....

- Title: When Trains of Thought Derail
- Artist: Aya Hanako
- Description: I wrote this for a poetry writing class I took this past semester at school. It was one of the final three poems that I wrote and revised. I know it doesn't rhyme. There's no written law stating that poems -have to- rhyme.
