My time here grows short, my flesh to decay,
As all flowers fade, I too waste away.
But for you, my Love, my promise fulfill:
Be with you, my Love, forever I will.
If spirits do wander the earth in shame,
regret, in malice, or to love's refrain;
The last I will choose to stay with you still.
Be with you, my Love, forever I will.
If there be a Heaven, a world in the sky,
as sung to the babes in some lullaby,
from whence I could see you as if from a hill,
Be with you, my Love, forever I will.
If only to meet me, there is a Hell,
as the prophets and madmen of old did foretell,
I look up! a glimpse of you: all pain it will kill!
Be with you, my Love, forever I will.
If the soul is replaced, is used by another,
and born to a different father and mother,
I will find you again, for my love will burn still!
Be with you, my Love, forever I will.
If nothing is left once the living has gone,
Bury me close, and try to move on.
My body becomes the earth that you till
Be with you, my Love, forever I will.

Description:
After reading "The Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd" by Sir Walter Raleigh in english class, we were asked to write a poem. Technically the assignment was to write a "modern day" version of the original, but... I can't make a poetry assignment that boring.
I wrote a few different poems that night, and this is by far my favorite (though I chose a different piece to present in class because it fit the assignment better.) - Date: 12/21/2008
