The small man entered on the stage
He walked up to the microphone and adjusted it to his level
*Cough-Cough* He cleared his throat
There was a silence
All of a sudden, there was a annoying squeak
People started to complain and to leave
After an hour the little man left the stage
The announcer came up and congratulated the little man

Not that it matters, but I think the entire thing would be strengthened if you cut the last line "that he had made a wonderful speech"...with the one before it we can assume that the little man already accomplished something with a job well done. It just adds more ambiguity.
