You say you like how the air smells before it snows
And I say that I really don't know
I've never known
It all smells the same to me
Every year just another dried up Christmas tree
To throw away
It's the spirit of the season is what you say
'Maybe'
I think (bitterly)
'On boxing day'
Christmas hasn't mattered to me in years
It's just another moment
I hate and you love
The way the carolers in the mall sing of the angels above
And I aint so sure that I've ever believed in a God
I believe instead, in when we were young
And in every single word you say
I remember all those years we used to play
Making snowmen in your front yard
Damn we'd work hard
Until our fingers were puffy-red and thick
And your mom would yell and you for not wearing your coat
But now I just don't see the hope
In the commercial advertisements for those stupid toys
But I know when we were young we'd always whine for them, boy
I remember that year when you had no money at all
And we went to the Food Bank
And your mother stood tall
Though a little embarrased
She thought that a homeless man scared us
I just couldn't look away
And if I saw that man today
I maybe would've invited him to my Christmas dinner
Well, maybe not
I wouldn't want him to see my family fight
And you tell me 'It's alright.'
When you see the bruise on my jaw
And I tell you I slipped on the ice
And that it's really just 'cause my shoes have no traction
I see your reaction
From behind your eyes
Yeah, you were always able to see through my lies
And in this mid-December winter I have to admit
I still haven't gotten you a gift
But the crowds in the mall make me squirm
You smile and say that one day I'll learn
And I wrap my arms around you
Buried knee deep in snow
And I don't know if you'll ever know
How badly I wanted to kiss you
Christmas Eve night
To press my lips to yours
Underneath the streetlight.
