It was around 5pm when a middle aged woman who lived alone came home from work for the day...It was the typical day for her, day in a day out she would leave, come home and start her dinner before watering her garden and sitting down for the evening, draining her mind of the days stressors. She lived alone, for her last relationship was abusive, and in all that was fair had no plans for another marriage. She just so happened to catch a glimps outside of her back window, when she saw a girl walking down the alley between the back of her house and the others. The area she woman lived in was a small town made of streets just outside of a very large city. It was a good area, and it was not un-ushual to see people driving or walking down the roads behind the houses at all. She would have paid it no mind, except the fact the teenage girl was wearing what appeared to be- a very heavy winter coat on a eighty five degree July afternoon. The woman, feeling concerned as she should be, opened her back door and yelled
"Hey!! girl! comehere!"
The woman ran to the back of her yard and opened the wire gate to the alley
"Sweetie? Why are you wearing a coat? arent you just burning up in that thing?"
The girl loked up at the woman, her eyes red with tears
"no...I'm freezing out here...I really am"
The woman's heart started racing...what was wrong with this girl? Was she on drugs? Is she mentally ill?
She touched the girls cheek and to her shock, they were cold,
"Oh honey...your cheeks are so cold" she said very puzzled.
She tried to brush her hair out of the girls face, when she noticed, her hair also, felt like she'd stood outside all day in the middle of January
"what in gods name happend to you?" The woman asked her
"you'd better come inside with me...we'll call your parents or.."
before the woman could finish her sentence, the girl broke down sobbing
"no...no..no" she said "I cant ...I just cant"
The woman put her arm around the girl, and her coat was also cold as can be, it was almost unbearable to touch, infact.
The girl slowly looked up at the woman, her eyes looked empty as if she was drained, like her body was there, but, her soul was worn out.
she touched the womans face with her cold hands. And the woman, felt the cold go through her body- She started shivering like she was standing outside in the winter with no coat.
When the girl took her hand off her cheek, the feeling of cold went away, and the woman warmed up in an instant.
"who are you?" the woman asked in a very astonished voice.
"I'm just a girl..." she said, before walking away, down the alley on a hot July afternoon.
