In the distance, she heard them gathering their weapons, the full moon was tonight. And it would be her last. She sat in the small cave and tears drifted down her cheek. She was supposed to betroth to him tomorrow… And now she wouldn’t live to see day break again. The light flowing into the cave was blocked. Wiping the salty tears away quickly, she looked up into the eyes of her beloved. Breaking down into sobs, he held her. His tears dripped down to flow with hers. A horn was heard in the distance; the hunt was on.
She sat there, her body rattling from the sobs. Lightly kissing her head, he picked her up, bringing her out into the dying daylight. He set her down gently, tilting her chin upwards. The kiss was salty, bittersweet, and yet so passionate, she became lost to the world. Reluctantly backing away, he looked down into his one and only’s eyes, seeing fear, sadness…. Another tear slid down his cheek, betraying his sadness as well. Hearing them approaching, he pushed her towards the forest; she would not die for such a thing as this, something she could not change… The men came over the hills, spears ready for attack. Blocking them with the only thing he had, he put his body in between the forest with his love, and the men that threatened her life.
Few words were exchanged before the silence. Peeking out from the trees, the young lover saw her other half fall to the ground, a spear protruding from his chest. The world seemed to stop as she screamed, running from the cover of the forest to her fallen love. She fell to the ground next to him, putting her hand on his chest, feeling his weak heartbeat. He coughed, a strained gurgling sound that made her heart break even farther. He smiled up at her, numbness grabbing his body, slowly spreading. He had known they would kill him, he had felt the arrow pierce his heart, but he had hoped she would have run instead of stayed. At least she would be the last thing he saw. She bent over his head, cradling it gently, as to not put him through more pain. He whispered three slow, quiet words, making her sob and shake with anger. She bent and kissed him for the last time. He laid back and a peaceful expression took over his face. For a moment everything stopped as his chest fell for the last time. She over-looked his body, his wound that was still bleeding, his hand which was on her knee soothingly, and his peaceful smile, his closed eyes….
It was so wrong… Just yesterday they had been kissing and cuddling, as fiancés should. Now…. He was lying here, lifeless, with the sweetest of smiles. It was wrong… He died in vain because of her species. Died to save her. More tears splashed onto his face, mixing with what was left of his and the blood he had coughed up that which was also on her lips. Anger bubbled in her chest, something that rarely happened. It was mind consuming, this rage. So much of it…
She screamed out in pain, as something shifted inside of her. It stopped for a moment, leaving her breathless and in pain. Then it happened again, the pain more sharp and unceasing. She screamed again, feeling her ribs pop and expand, her spine growing longer. Her nails grew into claws, her teeth into fangs. Her eyes turned from her gorgeous green to deep amber. Fur grew along her spine as her simple white dress tore apart from the lack of human shape ness she now had. The fur kept growing, expanding over her entire body, black as midnight. Her legs and arms changed from human shaped to wolf. In the end laid a black heap. The men sent to hunt her stood in shock. The moon hadn’t even risen, it was impossible. The heap moved, revealing burning amber eyes and ivory fangs that yearned for revenge... So ended the lives of the townsmen.
