“Now, you two must act as a couple very in love or the mission will be blown.” I groaned and looked to my ‘boyfriend’. He was smirking and pulled me into a hug.
“Well, this is nice. I hate you, remember that.” He pulled away and smirked, dragging me from the room so we could, no doubt, go over the ground rules.
“Okay,” we were standing his the room he shared with his brother. “Rule one, only hug or kiss in public. Rule two, No touching whilst sleeping. Rule three, no growing attached, unless it is mutual, which is doubtful” I nodded at his rules, agreeing for the first time with him.
We went our separate ways to pack. My favorite part of the mission was I got to be called by my real name, Demi, instead of my annoying spy name, Jamie. Paul, my ‘boyfriend’, was going to be known as his real name, Joe.
I finished packing just as Joe knocked on my door. We hated each other, but we were the best spies and this was a top rank mission and we couldn’t afford screw ups. I don’t even know why we hated each other; I think it was because I made him eat sand at training camp when we were sixteen. But, battling was how we became the best; we were so focus on beating the other we unknowingly made each other better too.
I opened my door and he waltzed in like he owned the place which got on my nerves. “Are you ready, babe?” He grimaced as he tried to get used to using pet names.
Third POV
“Yeah, I am.” As they walked out he held the door for her and wrapped his arm around her waist. If they had been in public anyone would have thought that they were the happiest couple because they both had genuine smiles on and were giving each other loving. That was all part of the act, right?
They made their way past enemy lines and acted like a real couple, saying I love you and giggling the whole way. The enemy was a hotel who supposedly killed their guests when it was young couples. Two eighteen year olds were the perfect spies for the job and could handle themselves. They were to stay there for twenty-one days, or three weeks.
Demi's POV
“Demi, we have to out tonight! The beach looks beautiful.”
“Joe, if you think that’d be best we must! I love you, handsome.”
“And I love you my beautiful rose.” We were making a lovey-dovey scene in the lobby so that the workers would see us. If the rumors were true then something would happen soon.
When we reached the beach we didn’t drop the act. I guess that it had felt so right that neither of us realized we were doing it.
Third POV
“Babe, guess what!” Joe cocked an eyebrow at his pretend girlfriend as she continued. “I found myself smiling for no reason today, but then I realized I was thinking about you. I know rule three was ‘don’t get attached’, but I think I always have been. I love that we are so different from each other, but we have this chemistry that is unmistakable.”
Joe was speechless. His mouth was agape and I was so heartbroken. I had hoped that just maybe he cared about me the same way that I did. I turned away from him and knew he could never feel the same way and I just had to banish those wonderful thoughts from my advanced brain and heart.
Demi's POV
We walked back to the hotel after my outburst ruined our night. We were hand in hand and the people at the front desk stopped us.
“Your room seems to have flooded; our bellhop will take you to your new room and allow you to get resettled. I’m sorry for the inconvenience.” Joe and I shared a look, knowing this is what we were waiting for. Joe nodded curtly to the man and wrapped his arm around my waist, pulling us behind the bellhop.
The bellhop led us to a first class room. After we entered he shut the door and we heard a distinct click, knowing we were locked in. Anyone else would have panicked, but we were trained. Sure I was still a little scared and I grabbed onto Joe a little tighter, but I was used to fear.
Joe led me to the bed, checking for traps and bugs. He sat me down, feeling me shake with fear. I think I was scared for him the most. He was reckless in fights; I couldn’t bare the thought if he was hurt.
~*~Joe’s POV~*~
As I searched the room I thought about what Demi said on the beach. Little did she know, the feelings were mutual, but why would I tell her that? She was the one who captured my heart the moment I saw her at the training camp all those years ago. I didn’t want her hurt. I would rather die.
As I was about to search the bathroom I felt her beside me, clutching my arm.
“It will be better if we are both there to fight if something happens.” I nodded to her and patted her hand, wrapping my arm around her again. I had never been so scared on a mission before. Maybe it was because I didn’t know what these people were capable of, if anything. Or maybe it was for Demi, the girl I needed to be with more than anything.
~*~Demi’s POV~*~
As we were in the bathroom I couldn’t help but get bad vibes from the room. Something was in there that wasn’t supposed to be. I heard a quiet ticking and opened the toilet lid slowly. Joe looked inside and there was a small, silent bomb that had to have noxious gas in it, to kill us without blood evidence.
Joe’s eyes were wide with fear and I was sure mine matched his. He leaned back down and saw we had fifteen minutes to either find a way out or die.
He pulled me back into the main room, pacing about. A sudden thought occurred to me. If the gas was released there had to be a containment system to keep it in this room. I looked at the main doors and saw they there had been, indeed, towels wrapped around the door frame, keeping all air inside here.
Joe had stopped pacing and came up behind me, wrapping his arms protectively around my waist and resting his head on my shoulder. “Babe, I want you to know, I love you too, but I’m afraid of falling and getting hurt.”
“I promise to catch you. I love you Joe, and as long as you promise not to hurt me I won’t hurt you.”
"I promise, but how are we going to get out of here?”
“I have a plan, come help me.” I had him follow me into the bathroom and we grabbed all of the towels. There were ten in total. I place three around the bathroom door and glued them in place with the glue I always have with me. Then I pulled Joe into the closet with me and we placed the last seven all in the closet, keeping one to help us breath just incase.
We waited for what seemed like forever and finally a beeping was heard from the bathroom, signaling that the bomb had expelled the toxic gas and that in approximately twenty minutes we would be dead.
Joe and I were cuddle close together and thirty minutes later I heard the sound of a door opening in the main room. Joe and I took down our towel barricade and slowly made our way into the open. There were three men. All of them were looking at the towels on the bathroom door and they were shocked to say the least. Joe and I took them out easily and we left the hotel, slipping past all the employees.
We arrived back at HQ and told them everything, except our new found feelings. The hotel was shut down immediately and we were commended by the governor. We gradually introduced our new found kindness into our everyday lifestyle and we were finally called into the director’s office.
“You two have not been complained about once, I kind of miss it. What happened?”
“After the mission we found out our real feelings. We are trying to gradually ease into a relationship.” Joe answered him with ease and the director seemed taken aback.
“Well, that is fantastic, you are free to go.” We left with confused looks on our faces. Joe led me to my room and stopped me at my door.
“Jamie, I mean, Demi, please, let us make this work. Please be my girlfriend.” I smiled to him and nodded. He leaned down and pecked my lips slightly before kissing me full on in a passionate, close-mouth kiss. It took my breath away and I couldn’t have been happier.
