Last night it took Matt and I an hour to pick up the kitchen. Every appliance
was broken, we were lucky we had an extra coffee pot, I think we'd kill each
other without our morning coffee.
We made it just in time for the game, again, our team won. The team hasn't lost
since Matt started coaching them, he was one of the best coaches you could
possibly find.
Today is my first day as the english teacher. The only thing I hated about it
was the fact that you had to dress up till casual friday. Lucky for me though,
it's a Thursday so tomorrow, jeans will be my best friend.
"Ah, Mrs. Death, welcome. Now, we will get you familiar with the lesson plan.
You have classes periods one, three and seven today, four, six and eight
tomorrow. We go by A days and B days. Today is an A day. So we only have one,
three, five, and seven classes." The principal explained. After he ran me
through the lesson plan, seating charts and students names. I set up my plan for
the day. It was pretty much just geting to know the class, then I would go into
a little Romeo and Juliet, just so that when the class is asked, they won't tell
him that I didn't teach anything.
The the first two classes were slow. Now it was time for lunch and maybe a quick
stop to see Matt.
"You must be the new teacher." A man walked up behind me. "Mrs. Death, am I
right?"
"Yes." I said turning around. "Josh?" I asked when I saw who was behind me.
"Tara? I haven't seen you since high school." Josh said with a slight laugh.
"I know, I didn't know you wanted to teach, the little emo boy football player."
I smiled. Josh and I were great friends in high school, the best of friends most
would put it. We told each other everything, help each other through it all.
After high school we went to different colleges, lost touch and didn't see each
other again. "I've missed you!" I hugged him.
"I've missed you too. I can't believe it, my best friend. What are you doing
back here, didn't you and your boyfriend move upstate for school?" He hugged me
back, we sat down and started eating lunch.
"Yeah, we moved back after though. Missed it too much here. Didn't you go to
Cali to study with your girlfriend?" The look on his face was both happy and
depressed.
"I did. We got married, moved back here and we both started teaching, she was a
freshman english teacher, I am teaching Sophmore english. Then, she died about a
month ago. You have her job." He sighed and pushed his lunch away, too upset to
eat.
"Oh, Joshy, I'm sorry. She was really great, the kids keep talking about
her...." I trailed and pushed his food infront of him. "Eat, you'll need the
strangth. I remember how you and I were in sophmore english." He smiled and
started eating again.
"Yeah, remember that one sub, we started tossing paper airplanes out the window.
Then the class turned into a paper airplane contest."
"Oh God, we got three weeks of detention for that one." We laughed and chatted
for the rest of our lunch break. I didn't make it to Matt's Office, not today.
"So, what period do you have off tomorrow?"
"I don't have first block."
"Same."
"Hey, lets go out for breakfast tomorrow, I'll help you with the rest of the
years lesson plan. I have all the plans at home in my wifes office."
"That's great. Hey, why don't you come to dinner tonight. We can catch up more."
"Ah, won't Mr. Death wonder why you have another man coming to your house?" He
teased, laughing a bit.
"No, with that hair cut, and casual clothes on you, you could fall as one of my
students." He always had long hair, it was his signature, you could say.
"Thanks, no wonder my first day people tried showing me to the freshman wing."
He stuck his tongue out and stood up. "Back to MacBeth!"
"Aw, I'll see you tonight, right?" I stood with him.
"Yeah. Where do you live?"
"Same house, actually. My mom died and left it to me."
"Okay, tonight. Bye." We both headed in different directions.
I was happy I actually knew another teacher other then my husband. Made fitting
in a whole lot easier.
The rest of the day went by pretty fast. So far, my favorite class is seventh
block, yeah, I am picking favorites. I won't treat them any better then the
other classes though.
Now I was off to Matt's office. Bug him before he decides to go out and start
practices.
"Matty!" I yelled running in his office, pretty much attacking him.
"Tara! You are not acting very profecional now." Matt said hugging me and
laughing slightly.
"After hours, my time." I smiled. "I invited an old friend to dinner tonight."
"Oh, cool. Who?"
"Remember my guy friend Josh?"
"The emo football player?"
"Yeah. He's coming over. I kind of feel bad though. I have his late wifes job."
I sat on his desk and looked at him.
"Hm, that sucks. I'm sorry." Matt turned to his computer and started typing up
some paper work. "I'll be sure to keep that out of the dinner convorsation."
"Yeah. No upsetting the guest this time."
"What do you mean by that?" He turned to me.
"Remember my little brother, he came down for a little to visit. You started a
sport convorsation with him, as you do all our guests and then you two started
arguing."
"Well he had a horrible choice in teams and I was telling him that."
"You could have been a bit nicer about it."
"Fine, no sports either. Happy?"
"Very. Well, I am going to go home and look up the medians number."
"Okay. Love you. See you at home."
"Love you too." I jumped off his desked and kissed him quickly, then ran out the
door.
I drove home and started searching for something to cook tonight. Before I
decided to major in English, I went to study cooking, but when I almost burnt
down the cooking wing, I had gotten kicked out. So I barely cooked anymore. I
went the safe way, took out things to make pasta. At least I was good at that.
I fried the hamburger, put the sause on low and started boiling the water. As I
waited for the water, I took out the phone book and looked for a medians number.
Cris Lambordian was the only one near by, so I dialed her number.
"Hello, Cris speaking." A young women answered.
"Hi Cris. I need your help. I have been attacked by a ghost for a year now. But
recently, he has started yelling at me and yesterday he completely destroyed my
kitchen."
"Oh my, this sounds serious." She said, her voice calm and serious. "I am busy
well through the weekend, do you think I can catch you on Monday, 3:30?" She
asked, though she was trying to sound business like, worry dominated her voice.
"Yes, perfect. Thank you very very much."
"You are welcome. Blessed be dear, may the goddess watch over you till then."
She must be Wiccan.
In Wicca, there is a God and a Goddess. There is no Devil. In the religion, it
is against the "commandements" as Christians would put it, to practice dark
Magick, meaning anything to harm someone. Most people preform light or white
magick.
I gave her all my information and hung up the phone. Just as Matt walked in.
"Hey Ta. Oh pasta, awesome." He walked over to the stove and stirred the sauce a
bit. "So, did you call a median?"
"Yeah, her name is Cris, she is going to be here monday around 3:30."
"Okay."
"Will you be here?"
"Um, yeah."
"Okay, you can drive me to work then. I'll just be up...extra early."
"No, I'll call off morning practice, give the team a break for one day."
I finished making the pasta just as Josh got here.
"Welcome to my home!" I jumped him with a hug.
"And it hasn't changed."
"Hey, it has more taste then before."
"I'd lick the walls and tell you you're wrong, but that would make me look
weirder then I already am." He smiled.
"Josh." Matt said, smiled and sat at the table.
"Matt." Josh did the same.
We all sat down and started eating, and of course, Matt and Josh started a
debate on sports teams, Matt being a hockey star and Josh a football start, they
argued over which sport was better in every aspect of the two games.
All was fine until a plate flew from the sink. What made it worse, was the fact
it flew right at Josh.
"Watch out!" I yelled, Josh ducked the plate flying over his head and hitting
the wall. We all looked at each other in shock. But the good friend Josh is,
laughed and changed the subject.
"That was great. Breakfast tomorrow Tara, right?" Josh said after recovering
from the plate incedent
"Yes. Don't forget the lesson plans." I smiled.
Josh left and I flicked Matts nose.
"'No sports either' my butt." I laughed.
"Ow, sorry, he brought it up. At least the flying plate changed the subject."
"Yeah, that probably made him never want to come here again."
"Yeah." He gave me a worried look, but pulled me upstairs instead. "Lets just go
relax, forget about how horrible tonight was and just be together." He smiled,
kissing me.
"Mmm, fine." I kissed him back, jumping on the bed.
*************
For once in a long time, I woke up without a mark on my body. Nothing had woken
me up, and the night was wonderful.
I got dressed and walked in the kitchen, pouring myself a coffee, looking
outside at the falling snow. Everything seemed perfect today.
The phone rang, "Morning Josh. Where we off to?" I asked.
"Um, downtown diner, that one we use to hang out at all the time, best cream
soda around." I could hear the excitment in his voice.
"Great. I'll meet you there in ten minutes." We hung up. I grabbed my car keys
and left.
I met Josh at the diner, we ate and talked about what I was to do for the rest
of the year.
"Okay, so she wants me to finish Romeo and Juilet, move to To Kill a
Mockingbird, then work on poetry the rest of the year?" I asked, finsihing off
my cream soda.
"Yeah. She has some project ideas in this folder." He handed me a purple folder.
"Worksheets are in this one," Handed me a blue folder, "And lastly all the
quizzes you'll need, are in this one." He handed me a green folder.
"Okay. Wow, she must really have loved her work."
"Yeah." He smiled. "Well, lets get to work before we get fired."
"Okay skater boy." I teased. Causal friday was also his best friend. He was
dressed in skate clothes, I'd laugh if a teacher grabs his arm and brings him to
my class.
We left, then I set off to teach all three of my classes today.
They were pretty fun. I followed the set worksheets, gave a project for Romeo
and Juliet. They had to make videos of one scence from the play. Modernize it
and make it their own. Groups were pre picked for everything also. She really
knew what she was doing. "Okay guys, have a fun weekend, you have till next
monday to get those in before we start To Kill a Mockingbird." I said. The bell
rang and class was over.
I drove home, thinking to myself. It was weird not finding something new. Was it
that I called the median he decided to stop? Either way, I am glad.
For once maybe Matt and I can have a good night sleep, not worry what events
will take place when we have someone over.
I never asked Josh that morning, but I was pretty sure he didn't want to go back
in our house till we knew for sure that the house wouldn't attack him.
